What is Stevia?
Stevia Rebaudiana (commonly
called stevia) belongs to the chrysanthemum plant family. It is native
to South and Central America, but is now is grown in over 20 countries.
It is tall and leafy, growing up to one meter high. The leaves contain
steviol glycosides (see ‘What are steviol glycosides?’ for more
information) that are high intensity natural sweeteners, 200-300 times
sweeter than that of sugar. Stevia is a popular ingredient used in a
variety of food products in many established markets, for example Japan,
where Stevia has been used for more than 30 years.

Is it safe to consume CSR Smart?
Yes, stevia is natural and 100% safe to
consume. Stevia was thoroughly tested by the Food Standards Australia
& New Zealand, before it was approved for use in the food supply
chain in 2008.
Is CSR Smart suitable for people
with diabetes, for young children and for pregnant and breastfeeding
women?
Yes. Food Standards Australia New
Zealand (FSANZ) conducted a comprehensive risk assessment prior to
approving addition of Stevia to the Australian food supply and concluded
that steviol glycosides are well tolerated and unlikely to have adverse
effects on health at doses up to 11 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day.
They specifically examined any potential adverse risk to children and
concluded “there are no public health and safety concerns for steviol
glycosides when used as a food additive at the maximum levels proposed”.
However, if you have any health concerns please check with your
healthcare professional.
Is CSR Smart available in different sugar variants e.g. white sugar, icing sugar etc..?
CSR Smart is currently available as a
fine raw sugar blend (500g pack) and as a white sugar blend (500g pack).
Can CSR Smart be used in baking? Can it be used in making both hot and cold recipes?
CSR Smart is heat stable and is
therefore suitable as a low calorie alternative in both hot and cold
recipes. As it is twice as sweet as regular sugar, you only need to use
half as much, so you cannot replace sugar in all recipes with CSR Smart
sugar. CSR have therefore developed a range of delicious recipes using
the new Smart White and Smart Raw sugar blends, so you can enjoy great
tasting, lighter treats.
